Be Cautious
With all the information floating around the internet, we may easily find misleading information when doing research online. Be reminded that anyone from anywhere can post anything on the internet and unfortunately this means that not everything you read on the internet (or anywhere else, for that matter) is true. Because of this, it is important as students to truly do research, which means clicking on more than just the two first links that come up on a search engine. Taking time to find these first two links' original sources, and digging deeper to find connections in resources that aren't as obviously connected to your topic can be the most rewarding discoveries. Also be warned before posting your own work online, because once posted, your work can be viewed, copied, saved, and criticized by anyone. If you are not ready for this type of exposure, please refrain from posting anything private as such. Though it may seem private while you type out a personal story about yourself at home in your room, think about all those people browsing the web in their own homes before you decide to post something publicly on the web.
On a separate note, for those students who may find the endless amount of information on the internet tempting, please remember that those caught plagiarizing will receive a zero on the assignment that was plagiarized and the student will be reported to the appropriate school authorities. Please take advantage of the knowledge to be gained from the internet and do not try to cheat your way through my class because in the end you are only cheating yourself.
Lastly, you want to avoid revealing too much personal information about yourself online. Solely doing this will keep you from being targets of online predators, cyber bullies, etc. People on the internet are not always who they seem, and it is best not to speak to others online unless you know them in real life. Your safety is most important and if you ever feel uncomfortable with something you read or see online, please stop and notify your parents, teacher, or any adult that nearest you.

Safe Internet Resources
Here are some websites I recommend for safe internet research use. I would encourage parents to visit these websites with their children and discuss important internet safety strategies together.
1. The FBI has some great internet safety tips for kids to check out.
2. Here are some additional internet safety basics.
3. On this website students will find a list of rules aimed towards online safety that students should try to follow while browsing the web.
